Blue Horizons Garden Resort

Close to the beautiful Grand Anse Beach but nestled in mature tropical gardens, Blue Horizons offers peace and tranquillity as well as authentic, old school, Caribbean charm and excellent value for money.

A far cry from the large Caribbean resorts, Blue Horizons is a small, simple hotel that's locally owned and run. You won't find a glitzy bar and the latest interior design trends here but you will get highly personal service from local staff, the chance to walk to corner shops and meet the islanders, and a real insight into life in Grenada. The hotel is located a five-minute walk from the island's best beach, there's a lovely pool and options to sail, kayak or snorkel in the turquoise seas. The grounds are also good for birdwatching with over 20 species seen here and you can borrow binoculars or take a guided walk. Cook for yourself, eat in the hotel restaurant with its lovely views of the bay or meander up to the busier end of the beach for a choice of bars and restaurants.

The hotel's 32 cottage-style rooms are well spread out across the gardens offering a sense of privacy and seclusion. Although simple in style, they are spacious and comfortable with the added bonus of a kitchenette and balcony.

Saint Lucia Pitons

The dramatic scenery of Saint Lucia’s pitons, twin volcanic spires emerging from the sea, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers excellent opportunities for exploration. The energetic hike to the summit of Gros Piton rewards with panoramic views but for those looking for something less strenuous, easier trails wind through the rainforest past an array of local flora and fauna. Alternatively discover historic cocoa plantations and innovative cacao menus.

Set on a 250-year-old working cocoa estate, surrounded by lush rainforest, Fond Doux offers a charmingly rustic and authentic Saint Lucian experience. Its 15 plantation-style cottages nestle on the hillside among the dense vegetation.

Blue Horizons Garden Resort

32 rooms, 1 restaurant, 1 pool

Description

Blue Horizons Garden Resort is a tranquil retreat set in mature tropical gardens. Family owned and run, you can tell that real care has been put into the hotel and it has an old-school Caribbean feel. The owner, Arnold can often be observed strolling through the grounds, chatting to guests.

With only 32 rooms spread across the gardens, there’s a great feeling of space at the hotel and the white sands of Grand Anse Beach are approximately 300 m (984 ft) away. It may not have the facilities of larger resorts, but there’s a genuine, relaxed Grenadian feel. Each room has self-catering facilities so you can cook, dine in the hotel restaurant or walk to one of the nearby restaurants.

For families

Children are very welcome here, a range of board games and puzzles are available from the Hospitality Desk. Babysitting services are available upon request, at a charge.

Blue Horizons is built into a gently-rising hill on the southwest coast of Grenada, within walking distance of the shops and restaurants of Grand Anse. The capital, St George's is only a 15-minute drive away.

The hotel is set approximately 300 m (984 ft) from Grand Anse Beach, arguably one of the best on the island. Despite being popular with both locals and visitors, the beach is large enough that it never feels crowded and the southern end, which Blue Horizons is closest to, is the quietest.

Our opinion

Set among blooming hibiscus trees and coconut palms, this welcoming resort is well cared for and is an ideal base for those looking to get out and explore the island. If you’re happy with fewer facilities, this is ideal if you’re looking for a smaller, less resort-like Caribbean stay.

If you don’t mind being a few minutes’ walk from the beach, this authentic Grenadian property is excellent value for money, and as you’re on a hillside, has views across the gardens toward the coast.

Rooms

The 32 studios and one-bedroom units are in plantation-style bungalows spread out among the mature gardens and there’s a feeling of space and quiet in the resort, even when full. All accommodation offers air-conditioning, ceiling fan, TV and a balcony or patio.

Superior Studio

These spacious, 40 sq m (430 sq ft) rooms include a small kitchenette area within the room and a small garden-facing terrace.

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite - Garden View

Deluxe One Bedroom Suite - Ocean View

These suites are set on the hillside with views of the ocean in the far distance. They vary in size between 50 sq m - 75 sq m (538 sq ft - 807 sq ft) and each features a separate bedroom with king size bed or two queen beds and a living room with sofa bed and kitchenette.

Activities, diving & excursions

There is a pool at the hotel and Blue Horizons also offers complimentary water sports on Grand Anse Beach, including Hobie Cat sailing, kayaking and snorkelling. Guests can also enjoy complimentary green fees at the 9-hole Grenada Golf Club.

Unusually, the resort offers great birdwatching opportunities due to its tropical gardens and it’s possible to view over 20 species of indigenous birds which inhabit the grounds of the resort, including the rare laughing gull and yellow-crowned night-heron.

There isn't a dive centre on site but the hotel recommend Aquanauts Dive Centre located nearby at the beach.

Food & drink

Although the rooms are set up to enable self-catering, the hotel does have a restaurant set up on the hillside with picturesque archways allowing great views of St George's and the bay. La Belle Creole Restaurant & Bar serves breakfast and dinner daily. There’s a focus on Caribbean dishes with an international twist, using locally-sourced ingredients.

The Aqua Pool Bar & Terrace serves alfresco lunch daily. There’s a daily social hour between 5.30pm and 6.30pm each day where guests are invited to come together to enjoy speciality cocktails.

Spa Facilities

Although there’s no spa at the resort, the hospitality desk will be happy to help you make bookings at a nearby spa.

Saint Lucia Pitons

Location: Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is an intriguing blend of cultures originating from the island’s first Amerindian inhabitants as well as French and British colonists who bought African slaves to the island during the slave trade. Although English is the main language, most islanders still speak Kweyol, similar to French.

The southwest coast, characterised by silvery-black volcanic sands and steep hills blanketed in rainforest, is also where you’ll find Saint Lucia’s second city, Soufrière, and the twin Piton mountains, the island’s most iconic natural wonder. The coastline in this part of the island is punctuated by hidden coves and colourful reefs that offer incredible snorkelling and diving, while the wilder Atlantic coast to the east has barely been touched by tourism.

The northwest is home to the charming capital, Castries, along with the majority of the resorts. The beaches in this part of the island tend toward the Caribbean idyll of sweeping golden beaches and swaying palms, and nightlife centres around the characterful restaurants and buzzing bars of Rodney Bay Village.

The mountainous interior is still home to many banana and cocoa plantations, once the mainstay of the island’s economy, and it’s also ideal terrain for hiking, climbing, birdwatching or zip-lining through the jungle canopy. It’s not all about high octane adventure though; Saint Lucia is also one of the most romantic destinations in the Caribbean, equally suited to relaxation and luxurious indulgence.

Fond Doux Plantation and Resort

Accommodation: Fond Doux Plantation and Resort

Tucked amidst a 250-year-old working cocoa plantation, Found Doux is a simple, family-run hotel close to Saint Lucia’s twin pitons. Surrounded by thick rainforest it’s world’s away from Saint Lucia’s beach resorts, offering a peaceful, secluded escape.

The 15 cottages here are a great base from which to explore the rugged south of the island which is defined by dramatic volcanic scenery, an array of birdlife and deep-green forest. Nature trails run right through the estate and there’s a real effort to support the environment; guests are encouraged to plant a tree to commemorate their stay.

Fond Doux Plantation has a rustic, traditional charm with local staff and a focus on Saint Lucian culture — many of the furnishings are locally made. A great way to experience Saint Lucia’s heritage and natural beauty, they offer a selection of experiences to encourage you to explore the local surroundings, and find out more about traditional chocolate making techniques.
