An enjoyable way to spend a morning is with a trip to Ibo Island. You will go by boat which takes about 45 minutes and then spend around two hours exploring Ibo (unless of course you are staying on Ibo Island).
Ibo was a key Swahili trading post and the capital before Pemba. You can wander among the main streets which have fascinating, but very crumbling, colonial architecture. There are around four forts that were built dating back to 1754, they were built in strategic places around the island for protection. The Portuguese were the last on the island and stayed here for around 500 years, the last to leave around 1975. Since then the buildings have been left to ruin as they are too expensive to fix and the villagers would rather live in the village.
Currently there are around 4,000 people on the island. You will also visit various silversmiths on the island making silver jewellery from old coins, which is for sale, the pieces carefully made and lovely. The religion is Muslim so covering up whilst on the tour is expected. After exploring the island you may stop at a sandbank for a refreshing swim and some snacks.

Rolas Island Trip
You can explore the island on which there is a very small fishing village where you often see fish out on racks to dry. There is a good amount of coral around the island and the snorkelling is wonderful.
